WIPO Conversation on Intellectual Property and Artificial Intelligence

This background note frames WIPO’s first formal “Conversation on IP and AI,” outlining prior consultations, surveys of IP office uses of AI, and the launch of WIPO Technology Trends on AI. It limits scope to IP system impacts and administration, sets a didactic objective, and lists expected outcomes including better understanding, formulation of the right questions, and identification of urgent issues. It clarifies that the meeting would make no recommendations and produce no report. The note positions AI as pervasive and fast moving, while recognising uncertainty about its legal effects.
