Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (FRIA) - A mandatory assessment that certain deployers must perform before putting a high-risk AI system into use to evaluate and mitigate potential effects on individual rights and freedoms. It identifies affected persons or groups, possible ‘risks of harm likely to have an impact... on fundamental rights,’ and corresponding oversight and redress measures. The EU AI Act links this obligation to prior authorisation for certain biometric uses and to the registration of high-risk systems. (EU AI Act, Arts 5(2) & 27; Recitals 34 & 96; Annex VIII).
